Craps: How to Play, the Real Odds and Where to Play Legally in the US
Craps is the fastest table in the casino and, played right, one of the cheapest: the Pass Line costs you 1.41% of every dollar decided, and the odds bet behind it costs nothing at all. That combination is why the loudest crowd on a casino floor is so often standing around the dice.
This site shows you every craps bet with its true price, lets you roll a fair table for free before you risk a dollar, and points you to legal places to play, from licensed online casinos in seven states to the land casinos on our map. Every number here comes from one open calculation.

How the practice table works
This table uses play chips only: no real money, no prizes and no account. It is a trainer for the bets themselves, so every bet shows its exact house edge beside its payout. Start with a Pass Line or Don't Pass bet on the come-out roll, then add odds, Come, Field or Place bets once a point is set.
A 7 or 11 wins the Pass Line on the come-out and a 2, 3 or 12 loses it, with the 12 a push for Don't Pass. Any other total becomes the point. Odds carry no house edge, and Place 6 and 8 are the cheapest of the rest. Field is a one-roll bet: 2 pays double, 12 pays triple.
Drag on the table to look around. Hold Ctrl or Cmd while scrolling, or pinch, to zoom, and a plain scroll moves the page. Click the felt or a bet button to place your chip, and use Take bets down to remove every bet the rules allow. Come bets on this table are flat, with no odds behind them.
What craps is, and why the table gets so loud
Stand near a craps table for five minutes and you will hear it before you understand it. A dozen people cheer the same roll, groan at the same seven and trade chips faster than at any other game. The noise has a simple cause: most players bet on the same outcome, so the whole rail wins or loses together.
Craps is a game of two dice and 36 possible results, and every price on the table is built from those 36 pairs. One player throws, everyone else bets, and the shooter role moves around the table. The rules sound intricate because the layout carries more than twenty bets, but a first-timer only needs one of them.
That one is the Pass Line, and it happens to be among the cheapest bets in any casino. Learn it, add odds behind it and you are already playing craps the way experienced players do. Everything else on the felt is optional, and most of it is expensive, which is exactly what our guide to every craps bet spells out.
How to play craps in one hand
A hand starts with the come-out roll. If it is a 7 or 11, the Pass Line wins at once; a 2, 3 or 12 is craps and it loses. Any other total becomes the point, and the dealer moves a round puck onto that number with its ON side facing up so the whole table can see it.
Now the shooter keeps rolling until either the point comes back, which wins for the Pass Line, or a 7 appears, which loses it and ends the shooter’s turn. Rolls in between do not touch a Pass Line bet at all. When the hand ends, the dice pass to the next player and a new come-out begins.
That is the whole structure, and our step-by-step guide on how to play craps walks through buying chips, where to stand and what to say. If you want to see a single hand in slow motion, the page on the come-out roll and the point follows every roll and what it does to each bet.
The best way to learn is to play craps a few dozen hands for free. Use the table above: put a chip on the Pass Line, roll, and watch the puck and point as the hand develops. When a point is on, try a place bet on the 6 or 8 and notice that it stays up after it wins.
The crew around a casino craps table
A full-size craps casino table is run by four people. Two base dealers stand at the sides, take your cash, hand you chips and pay the bets in their half of the layout. The boxman sits between them, watches every payout and guards the chips. Opposite him the stickman pushes the dice and calls each roll.
The layout is printed twice, once for each end of the table, with the proposition bets in a single box in the middle. Stand anywhere along the rail, drop your cash on the felt rather than into a dealer’s hand, and ask for chips. The craps table layout guide names every box and what it pays.
Two dice, 36 outcomes
Pick a total and see every way the dice roll it
A 7 can land six ways, a 6 or 8 five ways, a 2 or 12 only once. Those counts explain every payout on the craps table, from the Pass Line to the long shots. Tap any total below to light up its combinations and see its probability, its odds against and how often it rolls on average.
The price of a bet
What each craps bet costs you per hour
House edges are easier to feel in dollars than in percentages. Pick a bet, a stake and how fast your table rolls, and the calculator shows the average cost of keeping that bet working for an hour. Compare the Pass Line with Any Seven and the difference between a cheap bet and an expensive one becomes hard to miss.
The pattern holds at every stake. Line bets and place bets on the 6 and 8 cost a few dollars an hour at a $10 unit, while one-roll proposition bets cost more than a hundred. Our full craps odds chart lists the probability and house edge of every bet, all computed from the same 36 pairs.
Strategy Lab preview
Race four craps strategies over 1,000 shooters
Every betting system promises something, and the quickest way to test the promise is to run it. The race below deals a thousand shooters to four common approaches and shows how each finished. Press it a few times: the luck moves around from run to run, but the cheap strategies keep finishing ahead of the expensive ones.
The lesson is not that one system wins. None of them beats the house edge over enough rolls, and the best craps strategy is simply the one that pays the lowest price per decision. For a full test with your own bankroll, unit size and session length, open the Strategy Lab, which runs thousands of sessions in a few seconds.

Every pin on this map is a craps casino whose own website, or whose state gaming regulator, confirmed a craps table when we checked. Tap a pin to see the casinos in that city, or pick a state to highlight it. The full directory lists addresses, Google Maps links and published table minimums and odds where casinos share them.
Nevada has the most tables by far, but a craps casino is rarely a long drive away: Mississippi, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan and Washington all have a dozen or more. California’s tribal rooms mostly run card craps instead of dice. Browse the casino map or check craps laws by state before a trip.
Legal online craps, state by state
Seven states license online casinos. New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania and West Virginia are the big markets, and Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island have one or two operators each. Everywhere else in the US, offshore sites that accept Americans operate without a US license, and players have no regulator to turn to if a withdrawal stalls. We only list licensed sites.
Licensed sites offer two kinds of online craps. Computer-dealt games use a certified random number generator and let you play at your own speed from about a dollar a bet. Live-dealer craps streams a real table from a studio, with real dice and a bet timer. Both settle the Pass Line at the same even money.
To play online craps you need to be 21, open an account with your real details and be physically inside a licensed state when you place a bet. Our guide to online craps for real money covers the licensed operators, what to look for at each one and how to check a license on the regulator’s own website.
Checking a license takes a minute. Each regulator publishes its list of approved online casinos: the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, the Michigan Gaming Control Board and the West Virginia Lottery. If a site is not on the list for your state, it is not a legal place to play craps for money.
Craps variants you will run into
Walk through a modern casino and you may see three versions of the game. Bubble craps seals real dice under a glass dome and lets you play from a touchscreen seat, usually at a lower minimum. Crapless craps removes the losing come-out numbers but charges more for it. Card craps replaces the dice with cards where state law requires it.
Card craps deserves a word of its own. In California, state law keeps dice from deciding the outcome alone, so tribal casinos there use cards or a mix of cards and dice to produce the same totals. The bets and payouts look familiar, but always read the table’s own rules before you buy in.
The rules and the math change more than the look. Crapless craps raises the Pass Line edge from 1.41% to about 5.38%, while a fair bubble machine keeps the standard prices. Our overview of craps variants compares them side by side, and you can learn how to play bubble craps before trying one.
What the house edge means over a night of craps
A house edge is a long-run average, not a fee taken from each bet. On any single hand you win or lose the whole stake, and a good shooter can pay the table for twenty minutes. Over hundreds of decisions, though, the edge becomes the most reliable number in the room.
Take a $10 bettor at a busy table that decides about 30 Pass Line bets an hour. At 1.41% the expected cost is around $4 an hour, less than a drink at most Las Vegas casino bars. The same player betting $10 on Any Seven every roll would expect to lose about $160 over the same hour.
That gap is the single most useful thing to know before you play craps for money. It is also why we put the house edge next to every bet on the free table: select any bet and the price appears. Players who learn to read those numbers spend less and usually play longer.
Play craps responsibly
Craps moves quickly, and a fast table can play a hundred rolls an hour. Decide on a budget before you buy in, keep the money for the odds inside that budget and stop when it runs out. If gambling stops feeling like entertainment, our page on playing responsibly lists limits, self-exclusion and free, confidential help.
Frequently asked questions
What is craps?
Craps is a casino dice game in which players bet on the outcome of rolls of two six-sided dice. One player, the shooter, throws the dice while everyone else bets with or against them. The main bets are decided over several rolls, and the best of them give the house an edge of under 1.5%.
How do you play craps for beginners?
Buy chips, put a bet on the Pass Line before the come-out roll and watch the dice. A 7 or 11 wins, a 2, 3 or 12 loses, and any other number becomes the point. The point then has to roll again before a 7. Add odds behind your bet once the point is set.
How does craps work at a casino?
A casino craps table has a crew of four: a boxman who supervises, a stickman who handles the dice and calls the rolls, and two base dealers who take and pay bets. Players stand around the rail, take turns shooting and place chips in the printed boxes of the layout.
What is the best bet in craps?
The odds bet behind a Pass Line or Don't Pass bet is the best bet in the casino, with no house edge at all. The line bets themselves cost 1.41% and 1.36%. Place bets on the 6 and 8 at 1.52% come next, while almost everything in the middle of the table costs 9% or more.
Can you play craps online for real money in the US?
Yes, in the seven states that license online casinos. New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania and West Virginia have a dozen or so sites each, and Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island have one or two. You must be 21 and physically inside the state, which the sites confirm with geolocation. Anywhere else, real-money craps means a land casino or a tribal casino.
Is it legal to play craps in my state?
Casino craps is legal wherever a state allows casinos with table games, which covers most of the country, from Nevada and Mississippi to tribal casinos in Oklahoma and Washington. California and some tribal rooms use cards or other devices instead of dice deciding the result. Utah and Hawaii allow no gambling at all.
How do you win at craps?
No betting pattern beats the house edge, so winning at craps in the long run is not possible. What you control is how much the game costs you. Stick to Pass or Don't Pass with full odds, avoid the proposition bets, keep sessions short and set a loss limit before the first roll.
Can I play craps for free?
Yes. The table on this page plays the main casino bets, from the Pass Line and odds to Come, Field and place bets, with fair dice and real payouts, all without spending money. It runs in your browser with no sign-up, so it is a good place to learn the flow of a hand before a real table.
What does the pass line mean in craps?
The Pass Line is the strip around the edge of the layout where most players bet. It wins with the shooter: a 7 or 11 on the come-out roll, or the point repeated before a 7. It pays even money, carries a 1.41% house edge and is the foundation of nearly every sensible craps strategy.
What is a come bet in craps?
A come bet works like a fresh Pass Line bet made after the point is already set. The next roll becomes its own come-out: 7 or 11 wins, 2, 3 or 12 loses, and any other number becomes the come bet's point. It lets you have several numbers working at once at the same low edge.
What is a horn bet in craps?
A horn bet is a one-roll bet split evenly across the 2, 3, 11 and 12. If one of them rolls, that part pays and the other three units lose. It costs 12.5% of the amount wagered, roughly nine times the price of a Pass Line bet, which is why dealers call it a sucker bet off the record.
What are the odds of rolling a 7 in craps?
A 7 can be rolled six ways out of 36 with two dice, so it comes up 16.67% of the time, or once every six rolls on average. That makes it the most common total, which is why the 7 wins on the come-out roll and loses every Pass Line bet once a point is on.
How much money do you need to play craps?
At a land casino plan on at least ten times the table minimum for a short session, so $100 or more at a $10 table and more if you take odds. Online craps in the four legal states starts lower, often a dollar a bet. The free table here costs nothing and resets whenever you like.
What is bubble craps?
Bubble craps is an electronic version of the game in which real dice are shaken inside a clear dome by a burst of air and the machine settles the bets. Players sit at touchscreens instead of standing at a rail. The rules and payouts follow the regular game, often with lower minimums than live tables.
Is crapless craps better than regular craps?
No. Crapless craps removes the losing 2, 3 and 12 on the come-out roll and turns them into points, which sounds better for the player. But the 11 no longer wins, and hard points like 2 and 12 rarely repeat. The Pass Line edge rises from 1.41% to about 5.38%, nearly four times higher.
Do you tip the dealers at craps?
Tipping is customary at a live craps table. Most players tip by making a small bet for the dealers, often on the Pass Line or a hardway, and saying it aloud so the crew knows. A common rule of thumb is a dollar or two after a good hand or every half hour of play.
